Jade Ruck quizzed over death of her daughter Harley
Police were called out to a flat on St Davids Road, Abergavenny, at around 5.30am yesterday found a child seriously ill and desperately battled to save her. They carried out heart massage, but paramedics pronounced the little girl dead at the scene.
A 22-year-old woman arrested, and who remained in custody last night, was named locally as Jade Ruck.
The baby girl is believed to be her daughter , named as Harley. Police said they were not looking for anybody else. Chief Inspector Rod Grindlay, of Gwent Police, added: “This is a tragic incident.
“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death at this time.
“It is a domestic incident and there is no risk to the wider community.”
Forensic officers in white suits yesterday combed the block of flats for evidence as uniformed officers carried out house to house inquiries.
A shocked neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “Police arrived in the street very early, followed by the ambulance. Then all hell broke loose and there were cops everywhere.
“It’s all so sad.”
Last night, neighbours in the close-knit community, which lies yards away from local school Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni, were “in shock”.
Charlene Radnor, 23, who lived on nearby St Andrew Crescent, and regularly saw baby Harley, said: “I have seen the baby before, she has been over my house.
“The latest we heard was one of the neighbours had phoned my mum and seen them carrying the body of the baby out, and then all these forensics and police are here.”
“I’m heartbroken.”
Miss Radnor said Harley was a “beautiful girl”.
“She was a little girl with big blue eyes, piercing blue eyes,” she said.
“She was lovely and had a little red spot by her cheek,” she said. “We’re all in a state of shock. This is a quiet area.
“I can’t get over this happening to a little one like her – she was a beautiful little girl, she was. It is really, really sad.”
A friend of Ms Ruck’s, who declined to give her name, said: “Jade is a quiet, timid girl and a fantastic mum. And Harley’s a little darling. Jade lived for that little girl, especially since she split up with her boyfriend,
“She’s good as gold with the baby. I haven’t got a clue what’s happened.”
Another neighbour said Harley was a happy and well-behaved child.“She was lush, as good as gold,” she said. “She was always smiling and happy and was a beautiful baby and always had a little ponytail on her head. “She was only 11 months old and when you have a kid of your own, it hits home. A lot of people knew the baby, so it is going to be hard for everyone.”
Jade and Harley are understood to have moved to the ground floor flat within the last year.
A Home Office pathologist carried out a post-mortem examination, the results of which are expected to be released today.
